SKILLS FOR LIFE SENIOR ACCEPTED TO MILLERSVILLE’S INTEGRATED STUDIES PROGRAM

Skills for Life senior Faith Olumbe has been accepted as a full-time student into Millersville University’sIntegrated Studies program. A unified sports student-athlete and letterwinner in cheer, bocce and track and field (javelin, 400m and 1600m relay), the 21-year-old Olumbe received the Hoden Award as an athlete who is recognized for their character and team wide contributions.

“You’re all my family,” Olumbe said after her final unified track and field practice this season. “I love you all.”

Olumbe is the first CHS Skills for Life student attending Millersville, although other students have graduated on to similar programs at Arcadia, Temple and East Stroudsburg.

“With the support and encouragement of her family, school, and community,  Faith has demonstrated great persistence and resiliency that has lead her to achieving her greatest goal in not only being a successful Cheltenham graduate, but also a future Millersville alumni,” said Vonnie Gillick, Skills for Life Teacher.

The Integrated Studies program at Millersville is a two- or four-year inclusive post-secondary initiative for young adults with an intellectual disability. MU’s campus community of faculty, staff, coaches and mentors supports each student as they develop a person-centered plan to guide their journey at the school. IS students are fully immersed in the campus through engagement in academics, career exploration and building relationships. Students are enrolled as full-time non-degree seeking students, a status which provides them with all the rights and responsibilities of a degree-seeking student. Students in the program have access to institutional facilities, consistent with other students, which support the achievement of their goals.

“I met Faith while I was teaching at Cheltenham Elementary,” said Gus Ekhardt, Special Education Chair. “Faith was always friendly and, over the years, I’ve witnessed her develop her amazing ‘never quit” spirit. Faith will be missed but we are so excited by the opportunities she will have in the future.”
